Brief description

In the wooded area near Krummnußbaum you pass pilgrimage chapel Maria Steinbründl. It is nice to stroll along the waterfront in Persenbeug and Ybbs.

Description

The tour starts at the fire department in Krummnussbaum and leads through the village and on to Krummnußbaum-Holzern. At Maria Steinbründl (with a pilgrimage chapel) the way leads via Eichberg (hill) to Sarling. Now the way leads along the Danube until the main square in Ybbs. Afterwards you walk past the power station and over the Danube bridge until the waterfront in Persenbeug.

The Nibelungengau long distance trail is split up into 8 stages and can be passed through in both directions. Signs along the way will help you to find the right direction.

Route description Nibelungengau long distance trail 8: Krummnussbaum - Persenbeug

The tour starts at the panorama panel at the fire department in Krummnußbaum and leads through the village. Afterwards the way leads on the asphalt road Krummnußbaum-Holzern until restaurant Renner. In Maria Steinbründl there is a small pilgrimage chapel which can be visited. Now the way leads via Eichberg until Sarling where you can have a rest in the restaurant „Donauhafen“. Further on the way leads along the Danube on cycle paths –sometimes traffic- until the main square in Ybbs. The renovated old part of town with its romantic courts, alleys and town houses is a special eye-catcher. Then the way leads upstream for a while past the oldest Danube power station Ybbs-Persenbeug. Visitors get exciting insights how energy production using hydropower works. On the cycle path via the Danube bridge the way leads to Persenbeug to the waterfront where this stage ends. At Persenbeug/Ybbs at the Danube the Strudengau turns into Nibelungengau.

Directions

Highway A1 until exit Pöchlarn, then take the second exit at the roundabout, direction Pöchlarn. You drive through town, after the fire brigade (about 100-150 meters) turn right to direction Krummnussbaum.

Approaching from Krems or Grein via B3 at Klein-Pöchlarn you cross the Danube bridge. At the roundabout after the bridge you take the first exit direction Pöchlarn. You drive through town, after the fire brigade (about 100-150 meters) turn right to direction Krummnussbaum.

Parking

At the center of Krummnussbaum or along the waterfront in Persenbeug.

With the Austrian Federal Railway (ÖBB) you travel to trainstation Pöchlarn or Krummnussbaum (timetable). From the trainstation in Pöchlarn you can take a bus (Postbus) to Krummnussbaum (timetable).

Every year at the first Saturday in October the Nut-festival takes place in Krummnußbaum. The village transforms itself into a colorful festival area with delicious and funny offers around the nut. At the Ybbsiade – the biggest cabaret festival in German speaking countries – every year in April famous cabaret artists perform for two weeks.
