Details for: Vienna Water Pipeline Hiking Trail

Brief description

This beautiful hiking route commemorates the construction of the First Vienna Mountain Spring pipeline in 1873. In order to send valuable drinking water from the source in the Rax-Schneeberg area to Vienna, the required gradient was “divided” across the entire length of the pipeline. The hiking route is correspondingly flat. There are no noteworthy ascents or descents, apart from in the urban area of Baden – and even that is insignificant.

Description

Tip/Fun-Fact: In 1998, this path was created in the direct vicinity of the pipeline route, to mark the 125th anniversary of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline. This is where the traditional Genussmeile (“Pleasure Mile”) festival, including wine tasting sessions in the vineyard, takes place every September.

Route description Vienna Water Pipeline Hiking Trail

From Bad Vöslau, we will walk straight along the pipeline route, heading north. After about an hour, we will reach Baden (the urban parts of the route are not marked out). We will pass the Helenenfriedhof cemetery, Steinbruchgasse, the viaduct, the Hildegardbrücke bridge, the thermal baths of Baden, Schlossgasse and Marchetstrasse until we reach the casino. We will then follow the Kaiser-Franz-Ring before turning left onto Welzergasse, from where we will turn right onto Trostgasse, before turning right onto Flamminggasse and right again onto Schiestlstrasse. From here, Gumpoldskirchen is approx. 100 m away, following the Mountain Spring route. The village is approx. 5 km away. We will head north as we leave Gumpoldskirchen and cross the country road. After approx. 1 km, we will have our final opportunity to refill our flasks before we reach Mödling.
