Alpkogel
Mountain summit
Description
The Alpkogel is a 1,414 meter high mountain in the Semmering region. The Styrian-Lower Austrian border runs across the summit. Politically, the Alpkogel belongs to Spital am Semmering and Trattenbach, the latter's municipal border with Schottwien runs north just below the summit to the ridge line.
The mountain is usually climbed as part of the high-altitude hiking trails in the area: the Lower Austrian circular hiking trail via Semmering - Sonnwendstein to the Fröschnitzsattel, the Gloggnitzer Rundwanderweg (834) in several variants, or the Styrian Voralpenweg (740) on the ridge. Approaches are also possible from Göstritz, from Trattenbach via Schlaggraben or Ottenbach as well as Steinhaus via Dürrgraben. Several easy paths lead to the wooded summit.
Due to the numerous forest paths, the mountain is also easy to reach with mountain bikes. In winter, the Wechsel-Semmering-Panoramaloipe runs here. The mountain is an attractive destination for snowshoe hikers as well as ski tourers.
Alpkogel hut
South of the summit lies the Alpkogel hut at 1,314 meters. A small self-catering shelter hut of the Austrian Tourist Club. (Neunkirchen Section)
