Araberg

Mountain summit

Description

The Araberg is an 814 meter high mountain in the Triestingtal valley in the municipality of Kaumberg. It is mainly covered with deciduous forest. The Araberg is best known for the highest castle ruins in Lower Austria, the Araburg. It was built in 1180 for protection from enemies and as a place of refuge. The keep, which has been converted into a lookout tower, offers a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding area.

The village of Kaumberg lies at the source of the river Triesting, as well as on the "Via Sacra", the pilgrimage route from Vienna to Mariazell. The contrast between the Vienna Woods area with its gentle hilly landscape and the foothills of the Alps is particularly evident here.
