BAXA Kalkofen- und Steinbaumuseum
Museum
Description
Not far from Vienna, at the foot of the Leitha Mountains, near the “WÜSTE” nature park, one of the most extraordinary industrial monuments attracts visitors to a cultural tour of the countryside: the BAXA lime kiln.
Built in 1893, the lime shaft kiln now functions as a supra-regional meeting place for art and culture. The museum on the upper floor shows everything to do with the white gold of the Leitha Mountains - lime. A short historical journey through time takes you back to the arduous working day of the workers, illustrates the countless uses of lime in the past and present and an exclusive look into the heart of the kiln shows the gigantic dimensions of this picturesque building.
The BAXA lime kiln is easy to hike. Nature lovers can reach the building from Mannersdorf via the themed trail through a mixed deciduous forest. You will pass the Hunt, spolia and - with a bit of luck - rare orchids. On opening days, weary hikers can fortify themselves with homemade treats in the PopUpCafé. Well-behaved dogs are very welcome at BAXA and there may even be a small treat for the culturally interested museum dog. The BAXA gallery in the basement presents temporary exhibitions during opening hours and hosts an atmospheric Advent market in the run-up to Christmas. The homepage and Facebook page provide information about the program.
A visit outside opening hours is also worthwhile. The Leitha Mountains offer a number of hiking trails for the whole family and the distant view from BAXA to the foothills of the Alps as far as Vienna crowns every excursion.
