The 367 meter high Eichkogel, just south of Mödling in Lower Austria is a protected nature reserve. With its climatic and geological peculiarities, the area offers favorable conditions for an abundance of different dry meadows, scrub, forest landscapes and the insect world.
Location: Vienna Woods, Guntramsdorf
Characteristic plant species in spring are Iris pumila, Adonis rose and daffodils. The sandy loess soil exerts a great attraction for many soil insects. Thus, new species can always be admired on the Eichkogel. The Eichkogel is considered Austria's most important gathering place for endangered species.
The Eichkogel is home to a wide variety of ecological niches and habitats in a very confined space, making it the main area of occurrence for many endangered species. Of many species, more than ten percent of the world's population can be found on Eichkogel.
