Gippel
Mountain summit
Description
The Gippel is a 1,669 meter high mountain in the Mürzsteg Alps, six kilometers south of the market town of St. Aegyd am Neuwalde in Lower Austria.
It offers an impressive panorama of large parts of the Styrian-Lower Austrian Limestone Alps. Together with the neighboring Göller (1,766 m) to the west, the very distinctive Dachstein limestone mountain range of the Gippel is one of the most popular touring destinations in the vicinity of Vienna.
Location
Mostviertel, municipality: St. Aegyd am Neuwalde
Ascents and huts
On the way to, or around the Gippel there are several alpine huts to rest and recharge your batteries. But beware, not all of them are managed.
The Gippelalm is in operation during the grazing season, from May to September.
From the summit you reach the Pollwischalm and have the possibility to hike further to the highest point of the Hofalm, the Schnalzstein. From there a connecting trail leads to the Hofalmhütte, this is also managed in the grazing season.
(Inquire in advance about the opening times).
Here is a selection of possible ascents:
- Gippel - Hofalm crossing
Mountain tour starting from Zoegernitz-Weißenbach, walking time about 5:30 hours. - Mountain tour from homestead Zögernitz to Gippel summit
St. Aegyd - Weissenbachtal - Zögernitzer - Gippeltürl - Gippel, walking time about 2:15 hours - A tour is also the crossing of the "twin mountains" Göller and Gippel. Experienced mountaineers can climb both peaks in one day.
The Gippel in winter
The Gippel is a rather rarely visited destination in winter, so it is perfect to start a quiet ski tour. The most convenient starting point for this is at the former Gasthof Triebl in the Preintal. The Gippel can then be reached via the saddle of the Gscheidl and the Perschkogel.
