Peilstein
Mountain summit
Description
Climbing paradise in the Vienna Woods
The steep-sided limestone mountain Peilstein in the southern Wienerwald is 716 m high, lies in the municipal area of Altenmarkt and Weißenbach east of Nöstach and is popular as a climbing site because of its high rock falls steeply to the west. At the summit is the Peilsteinhaus of the Alpine Club, built in 1923, and on the hiking trail to Schwarzensee is the Peilsteinhütte of the Friends of Nature, built after World War II.
The rugged rock owes its appearance to the remains of the Urocean Paratethys at the end of the Eocene about 35 million years ago. Some large fossil ammonites, shells and snails have been and are still being found.
