Description
The Rax, also called Raxalpe, is located in the border area of Lower Austria and Styria, about 80 km south of Vienna. It is one of Vienna's local mountains. The area is accessible by the Rax cable car and is suitable for hiking for all ages, as well as for extended snowshoe hikes in winter.

The highest point of the Rax is the Heukuppe with 2,007 meters, this lies entirely in the province of Styria. The highest elevation of the Rax plateau on the Lower Austrian side is the Scheibwaldhöhe with 1,943 meters.
The oldest and first tourist cable car in Austria, which opened in 1926, leads to the extensive plateau. The Rax is especially popular with excursionists from Lower Austria and Vienna, in just 8 minutes the cable car takes visitors up the mountain. But the Rax is also interesting for mountaineers, demanding crossings and for climbers.
Winter sports on the Rax
In winter, the Rax offers a wide choice for ski touring and snowshoeing from the top station of the cable car. In addition, there is the possibility to toboggan, crossblade, or take a ride on the RuckXBob (sled, bob and backpack in one).

Whether in the valley or on the mountain, the region around the Rax is characterized by its numerous hiking opportunities and via ferratas.
Tips in the surroundings
In the World Heritage Region Semmering-Rax, visitors have numerous excursion destinations at their disposal. Many vantage points and huts invite you to hut hop and stop for a bite to eat.
