Töpperbrücke Lunz am See

Historical sites

Description

Andreas Töpper was an important Austrian industrialist who employed up to 800 workers through his iron rolling mills in Scheibbs and Lunz am See. In 1855, the industrialist had the well-known Töpper Bridge built in Kasten near Lunz am See and decorated with figures made of Mariazell cast iron. The figures represent the patron saints of the Töpper couple - Saint Helena the Empress, Saint Andrew the Apostle, Saint John Nepomuk and Saint Florian. After a particularly strong storm in 1861, the bridge collapsed, but was immediately rebuilt. The new figures were cast in Blansko and still represent the saints in full glory.
