Wehrkirche Weißenkirchen

Church, Historical sites

Description

The fortified church of Maria Himmelfahrt is considered one of the most important church fortifications in Lower Austria. The late medieval fortification was built around 1530 and has been largely preserved. Together with the Teisenhoferhof below, it forms a unified fortification.

On entering the church, the pulpit (1742) with the four carved evangelists catches the eye. The red marble baptismal font in the right-hand aisle and the statue of the Virgin Mary (1520) have been preserved from the Gothic interior. The black and gold high altar (the colors black and gold came into fashion in the 17th century) shows the oil painting "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" by Karl von Reslfeld (early 18th century). This is framed by four monumental figures of saints: St. Joseph, St. Joachim, St. Anne and St. John the Baptist. In 1775, the Krems organ builder Joseph Gatto built the rococo organ in green and gold, which was faithfully restored to its original state in 2002.
