Krems shopping street
Shopping center / streetDescription
It is not for nothing that Krems city center was voted the most popular shopping street in Lower Austria in 2015: it is considered one of the most beautiful and lively pedestrian zones in the entire country. A good 200 businesses have set up store against the historic backdrop of Krems an der Donau's old town - from traditional crafts and specialty stores to young companies and fancy boutiques. Cafés and restaurants round out the strolling mix in the middle of the Wachau World Heritage Site. Weekly markets and festivals - such as the Simandlbrunnenfest always in June as well as "Long Shopping Nights" - enliven the shopping mile all year round.
Tip: In Krems, the combination of shopping and sightseeing plus culture is particularly recommendable. The old town, which has been preserved as a historic monument, has countless architectural gems in store. The only one of Krems' four city gates still standing is richly decorated with inscriptions and coats of arms. The old town also starts here with the Upper and Lower Landstrasse - with churches, the revitalized Gozzoburg and the 16th century town hall. On Steiner Landstrasse are the magnificent Kunsthalle Krems and the famous Caricature Museum.
Pedestrian zone Krems: Historical steps to today's successful concept
Originally, the Krems pedestrian zone was opened in two sections: First in 1965 and - after expansion and uniform paving throughout - in the mid-1970s. Today, about 70,000 visitors a year are on their way here, where the main axis of the city was already in the Middle Ages. The shopping offer is supplemented by the Bühl Center and Mariandl shopping centers on the outskirts of the city.
Carefree shopping: Professional childcare on the Danube
DAS Kinderzimmer-Krems is a small, exquisite indoor playground in the city center (Spänglergasse 2a). Here, professional caregivers lovingly take care of the offspring by the hour in a small group - with creative, pedagogically selected play and craft materials. In the meantime, the grown-ups can take their time shopping and doing other errands.
