Leobendorf train station - Kreuzenstein castle

Train station

Description

The covered and barrier-free hall stop of the Viennese rapid transit lines S3 and S4 in Leobendorf - Burg Kreuzenstein awaits its visitors with an impressive excursion destination.

The medieval castle complex and namesake of the local train stop was destroyed during the 30 Years War and removed as building material. The reconstruction of Kreuzenstein Castle as a museum was carried out by Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek from 1874 to 1906 and, as a show castle, it is still a popular destination for excursions in the middle of Lower Austria.

Break in the line

In 1952 the passenger traffic beyond Retz was stopped because of the political changes in Czechoslovakia. It was not until 16.02.1989 that passenger traffic between Retz and Znojmo was resumed. In the meantime, the line Floridsdorf - Stockerau was electrified in 1962. The last section of the line Retz - Znaim was electrified only in 2006 and is operated with the Austrian power system.

Tip: There is a nextbike rental station directly at the station. The bikes are available in Lower Austria from April to mid-November. You can find more information on the website https://www.nextbike.at/en/niederoesterreich/ or in the nextbike app.
