When the way is the goal
As one of the most important and probably also best-known places of pilgrimage in Austria, Mariazell is a popular destination. The journey with the famous narrow-gauge railway - the Mariazellerbahn - is an experience in itself - the route itself offers plenty of discoveries over a total of 85 kilometres, such as the World of Styx and the Bahnhofsbräu in Ober-Grafendorf. A ride on the Himmelstreppe (Stairway to Heaven) and the Panoramawagen (Panorama Car) already make the journey to the Styrian town an unforgettable adventure.
Tip: If the 619 metres in altitude reached by the Mariazell Railway are not enough, take the Bürgeralpe Express up to the Mariazell Bürgeralpe to enjoy the view from Mariazell's local mountain with the Archduke Johann lookout and the Holzknechtland amusement park. The Bürgeralpe Express boarding station is just over a quarter of an hour's walk from Mariazell railway station.
Mariazell Basilica
After a short 20-minute walk from the Mariazell train station, visitors reach the town centre and with it the landmark of the pilgrimage site: the famous Mariazell Basilica.
Tip: Visit Mariazell at Christmas time. The illuminated basilica conjures up an unforgettable ambience for the local Advent market.
