Retz train station
Train stationDescription
Once upon a time, the tranquil station building in Retz was considered the terminus of the railway line towards Hollabrunn/Drosendorf. After the opening of the border, rail traffic with the small border town of Znajm was also resumed, but despite the endurance of the Cold War, it was decided in 2001 to discontinue passenger traffic on the Nordwestbahn line and to switch to ÖBB rail buses running parallel to the track.
Accordingly, the 3-track station remained open for freight traffic for a few more years, but in 2010 the train service was also shut down for transports.
Fortunately, it was decided not to demolish the station building, but to give the well-preserved line a new meaning with the introduction of the seasonal adventure train "Reblaus-Express".
Today, the station is in operation and is served daily in dense intervals by regional express trains to and from Vienna.
Making the way to the destination!
The journey from Retz to Drosendorf and back is considered to be a very steep one in terms of railway technology and is only too gladly mastered by the nostalgic trains of the Reblaus-Express. Passing vineyards and through shady forests, the train reaches speeds of up to 60 km/h. Extensive landscapes can also be enjoyed from the Heurigenwaggon (wine tavern wagon) - this is served in the course of the season alternately by regional wine tasters and clubs. The entire journey from Retz to Drosendorf takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
As a popular destination for excursions, Retz offers plenty of opportunities to explore the area away from the tracks.
It is an 8-minute walk from the station in Retz to the main square, the largest market square in Austria, and from there on to the picturesque windmill, for example in the course of the Rosstalenweg.
The vineyards and forests of the Weinviertel and Waldviertel are a blur and promise wonderful hikes and unforgettable views.
