St. Pölten train station

Train station

Description

St. Pölten station is a railway junction in the capital of Lower Austria. Thanks to its location on the Westbahn line, almost all long-distance and regional trains stop here. From 2006 to 2011, a comprehensive reconstruction took place: during ongoing operations and with attention to the protection of historical monuments.

Today, a light-flooded hall with ticket machines and an information centre, comfortable shopping facilities as well as escalators and lifts characterise St. Pölten's main station.

The completely renovated platforms, an underpass and a passenger tunnel as well as the spacious forecourt also guarantee modern rail travel. With short-stay parking spaces, a five-storey parking deck and covered parking spaces for bicycles, there is also sufficient parking space in the middle of St. Pölten's city centre.

Tip: There are two nextbike rental stations at the station area. The bikes are available in Lower Austria from April to mid-November. More information can be found on the website https://www.nextbike.at/en/niederoesterreich/, or in the nextbike app.

St. Pölten train station: Connection and routing

St. Pölten station is located on the existing and new construction route of the Westbahn. Almost all long-distance and regional (express) trains stop here - both in the direction of Vienna and in the direction of Amstetten and Linz. In addition, a selection of Erlauftalbahn trains runs from Pöchlarn to St. Pölten. The St. Pölten station is the starting point for 3 railway lines in regional traffic:

  • Traisentalbahn: southbound - within the city area of St. Pölten and further to Traisen and Hainfeld or Lilienfeld and St. Aegyd am Neuwalde.
  • Tullnerfelder Bahn: northbound - via Herzogenburg and further through the Tullnerfeld to Tulln
  • Mariazellerbahn: narrow-gauge southbound to the pilgrimage site Mariazell

Modern main station with an eventful history

The ground-breaking ceremony for today's St. Pölten railway station took place on 9 September 1856, and it was commissioned around two years later. In the years that followed, railway lines were continuously added and the station was rebuilt several times for specific purposes. After the bomb attacks of the Second World War in April 1945 only the most necessary renovations could be carried out. The first major reconstruction did not take place until the 1960s.
