The Hengsthütte stop is nestled amidst the enchanting scenery of the Hoher Hengstes, a foothill of the Schneeberg. The stop is located directly next to the refuge of the same name and is a popular stop for nature lovers.
The original lumberjack's hut can be found at an altitude of 1012 metres and has room for about 100 hikers, as well as sanitary facilities and a children's playground. The popular mountain hut can be easily reached on foot from Puchberg in about one and a half hours and spoils you with hearty delicacies and invigorating schnapps.
Tip: In winter, if there is enough snow, you can hire a toboggan from the Hengsthütte and use it to make your way back down.
Route information
- The Hengsthütte station is on the continuation route of the Schneebergbahn, one of three cogwheel railways still in operation in Austria. The station can be reached by the Salamander and Nostalgia trains of the Schneebergbahn.
