Excursion destinations
Whether for a relaxing walk along the Kamps or a longer stay - a stop in Gars is never wrong.
The enormously extensive range of leisure activities in Gars ranges from Segway tours to beach volleyball, horse riding and tennis to kayaking along the Kamp.
Starting from the train station as the starting point, it takes less than a quarter of an hour walk to reach the Kurpark Gars am Kamp - and that around the clock. The approximately 1.2 hectare large park is home to many a historical milestone. For example, the oak tree planted in 1983 on the occasion of Pope Pabst's visit to Vienna is located there, as is the memorial to the Austrian musician Falco, which was unveiled in 2011. In about 15 minutes walking distance from the train station Gars Thunau you can reach his villa, which he bought in 1987 as a retreat. From the inside, the historic house cannot be admired, but it also offers an awe-inspiring impression from the outside.
History
Gars am Kamp quickly became a popular recreational destination for city dwellers when it was conveniently connected by the opening of the Kamptal Railway in 1889. But the route of the Kamptal Railway was not exclusively an asset for passenger traffic. Due to several large mills along the line, freight traffic was also given special importance. 100 years later, a comprehensive renovation of the Gars-Thunau station was started.
