Route description Gravel bike tour Thayatal National Park
Starting from Retz, you cycle along the Kamp-Thaya-March cycle path to Hardegg, the smallest town in Austria. Past the Hardegg National Park Centre and through one of the most beautiful and species-rich landscapes, the route continues to Lukov. There is a refreshment stop here for the thirsty and hungry. The varied route takes you through meadows, forests, cultivated landscapes and also along the former route of the Iron Curtain. After a steep descent through the Šobes vineyard, you reach the Thaya. The route then continues over the suspension bridge at Nine Mills (Devět Mlýnu) and to the "Holy Stone". This place is an ancient cult site with one of the most beautiful bowl stones in Austria. From a footbridge, you can enjoy the marvellous view of the Retzer Land, the Pulkau Valley and the South Moravian region. Cycle leisurely back to Retz via Oberretzbach.
Directions
The wine town of Retz is very easy to reach by car. The B30 motorway coming from Geras or Hollabrunn and the B35 motorway coming from the Czech Republic or Pulkau intersect here.
Parking
There is a short-term parking zone directly on the main square. It is therefore advisable to park outside or at the nearby railway station.
Trains run at regular intervals from Vienna via Hollabrunn. There is also a train connection if you are travelling from Znojmo.
