Families enjoying nature in the Vienna Woods

Recharge your batteries and try something new, be dazzled by nature and smell the fresh air.

There is no doubt that families will love summery and child-friendly Vienna Woods. Whether it's hiking, cycling or walking: Awaiting at the gates of Vienna are many great reasons to travel with delightful interludes. The starting points for this promising trip are Klosterneuburg and the Wiental, which have a shared objective: great taste.

Families welcome: Our local tips
Children's laughter and amazement are as much a part of the incredible Vienna Woods as are extended breaks offered by the Gasthaus Bonka in Oberkirchbach. Incidentally, we have fallen in love with the roast pork from the old wood-fired oven, which tastes particularly good in the idyllic garden restaurant. Fridays are mostly dumpling days at Gasthaus Bonka, finished off with Grandma Bonka's apple strudel. And for digestion, we recommend a schnapps home-made by Grandpa Bonka before you plunge down the grassy slopes on skis. Yes, grass skiing actually exists and even the little ones will enjoy it! (please register in advance). Another worthwhile stop is the Landgasthaus Stockerwirt in Sulz, which not only has regional and seasonal dishes for delightful moments but also scores well with more than 1,300 of its own wines from the wine cellar; something chef Georg is particularly proud of.

Well worth a visit: Our trip tips
What does the Vienna Woods actually taste like? The team at the Wienerwaldkorb looked into this in more detail and you can now buy regional products such as Vienna Woods biscuits or Vienna Woods ham in the Schöny family's farm shop in Breitenfurt. We've already taken a particular shine to the robust nut bread. The basket lends itself perfectly as a surprise for those left at home or a "personal treat" after or even during a visit to Sparbach Nature Park. Just outside Vienna sits the oldest nature reserve in Austria, waiting for its visitors to enjoy its free-range wild boar and vast wild animal enclosure. Whilst the kids take part in special themed tours for young forest explorers or run riot in the nature playground, parents can relax on the comfy wooden deckchairs right under the tree tops and listen to the inhabitants of the forest. Liechtenstein castle is a worthwhile detour. A clear day can provide you with a fantastic view over the entire Vienna Basin!

Where insiders make a stop: Our insider tips
It's delightfully animally at the family Wieshaider's farm in Steinriegl. The idyllic courtyard in the old ruins with animals running free invites you to buy directly from the farm shop on a daily basis. Our tip: Reserve a veal meat parcel! There really is so much to experience in the Vienna Woods. To ensure that you really enjoy your holiday in the Vienna Woods, we recommend one or more nights in Wolf-Hof, a 4 flower horse farm situated in the middle of Pressbaum's picturesque countryside. Children are bound to love the spacious paddock and fruit garden in particular.
