Water, mountains and great food in the Wiener Alpen
From high above to down below and from creative to traditional: The Wiener Alpen lure visitors in different environments.
The Wiener Alpen are not only a vision of paradise - but also a paradise of delights. Even in summer, the many cabins, pubs and leisure options invite you to spend a long weekend and entice visitors on delightful tours.
The unusual and the local: Our local tips
Searching for creative, seasonal cuisine from a pioneer in their trade? Then have we got an ideal suggestion for you: Josef Schmutzer from Gasthaus Schmutzer of the same name, in Winzendorf, is famous for his stunning creations. We fell head over heels for his red sweet wine jelly, the home-made jams and the delicious, prohibited liqueurs. This is why we only eat in the Gasthaus and treat ourselves and our loved ones to a couple of souvenirs from the shop to take home. Visitors will also find several Heuriger delicacies in the region around the Schneeberg. For example, there are fine Mostbraten in Blockhausheurigen Posch in Wartmannstetten, the best being a pure apple cider, or sausages home-made in Hölles in Stelzenheurigen Schagl, where we swear by the cured meat smoked in beechwood.
Nature meets delight: Our trip tips
The outstanding producers can't be too far from where the food is cooked. For example, we became Fruchtwelt Mohr-Sederl in the fruit world, where there are fuller flavoured, naturally cloudy fruit juices and distillates. Our tip: Before you stock up on juices, vinegar, spreads or the newest creation, Kaiser Gin, in the farm shop, you must try the Ghegagupf typical of the region. The confectionery is organic through and through, the outside finished with delectable chocolate and the inside filled with fruit juice from Mohr-Sederl. Because "organic begins on the doorstep" as Ms Schneider always points out; we even taste the products in her store in Bad Fischau, the Schneebergland Genussladens. No wonder she only sells the finest of products in her region. When you've finished eating, you can bathe like an emperor in the Wiener Alpen. In the Thermalbad Bad Fischau thermal baths, in fact. Sitting in the midst of stunning parks, here there are two swimming pools with constant-running, crystal clear spring water at a temperature of 21°C in an unparalleled, historical atmosphere. A definite highlight of the Wiener Alpen is also the Myra Falls world of hiking and water, Muggendorf. The Myra Falls plunge from 125 metres into the moss-green valley and once again demonstrate the true force of nature.
"Enjoyment" expedition: Our insider tips
