Gfieder

As the local mountain of Ternitz, the Gfieder stretches 609 meters into the air. It is located in the Northern Limestone Alps and belongs to the district of Neunkirchen. Since 2004, the newly erected 14-meter high Gfiederwarte of the Austrian Tourist Club allows the best views to Semmering, Rax and Schneeberg up to Lake Neusiedl.

An impressive natural monument is the Vierbrüderbaum (Four Brothers Tree): the famous black pine dates back to 980 and grew up in four trunks due to game browsing. In its long life this special tree has already experienced a lot: In 1930 it was put under nature protection, in the Second World War it suffered war damage. Finally, in 1972, lightning struck two of the trunks. That is why today there are only two trunks left to admire.

Gfieder hike past the Vierbrüder tree

During the approximately 2.5-hour hike of the Gfieder from St. Johann (Ternitz) via Vöstenhhof, the two-trunked black pine can be visited. Afterwards it goes further up to the lookout. There are no refreshment stops along the way!
