Obersberg
Mountain summit
Description
The striking Obersberg, also called Ahornberg is a 1,467 high mountain in the Mürzsteger Alps and one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Lower Austrian Pre-Alps.
Location: Vienna Alps in Lower Austria, Göller-Gippel train, Mürzsteger Alps, Schwarzau im Gebirge.
The Obersberg rises close to the forest line, thus the tree population is already somewhat loosened and clearings, as well as rock pulpits offer a beautiful panorama. At the highest point is a wooden summit cross from here the view extends to the Ötscher. The view of Hochschneeberg, 12 kilometers away, is also particularly impressive.
The Waldfreundehütte on the Obersberg, which was opened in 1924, invites you to stop for a bite to eat. It is also possible to spend the night here. (Opening hours: Mid-May to mid-September on weekends and holidays).
Hikes to the Obersberg
- Starting from the village center of Schwarzau im Gebirge, a hike leads to the Waldfreundehütte Obersberg. The Obersberg offers a fabulous panorama. Up to 36 peaks of the Eastern Alps can be seen by hikers who stop at the hut. Walking time to the hut is about 2:15 h.
- Also recommended is the ridge trail from Obersberg to the west over the Preineckkogel to the Preinecksattel, walking time: about 2 h.
The Obersberg in winter
In winter, the Obersberg is often used for ski tours. The starting point is near Schwarzau im Gebirge. The Obersberg is also suitable for snowshoe hikes.
Tip in the surroundings
The nature park Falkenstein-Schwarzau in the mountains between Rax and Schneeberg is rather small with 14 ha. Special are the rare animal and plant species in the nature park. Up close the animals can be seen in the animal enclosure and in the petting zoo. For children there is a large playground.
