Description
The highest point of the mountain range of the Waxenecks lies at 796 meters in the municipal area of Pottenstein.
Location: Wienerwald, district Baden, Pottenstein.
The area around the Waxeneck is very popular with hikers. Numerous trails cross the area.
Near the highest point, at 785m, stands the Waxeneckhaus. The refuge is managed and invites hikers to fortify themselves here and enjoy the beautiful view. It is also possible to spend the night.
On the eastern slope of the Waxeneck is the Hallour Cave, which is designated as a natural monument. Together with the Höhlturm Cave and the Steinkopf Cave, it is one of the largest caves in the Mandling-Waxeneck area.
Paths to the Waxeneck
- The big Waxeneck round is a demanding and extensive hike, starting from Pottenstein to the Waxeneckerschutzhaus, where the hikers are spoiled with the view up to the Schneeberg. Returning, a long path leads mostly downhill to the starting point in Pottenstein. (Duration approx. 7h)
- The starting point for the classic hike to the Waxeneck is at the train station in Berndorf, so public transportation is also possible. The hike is relatively long but comfortable. You hike through forests on good paths with a steady incline to the highest point. From here a few meters downhill is the Waxenecker Schutzhaus. The way back takes place again on the ascent route. Duration approx. 5h.
- With the mountain bike on the Waxeneck. The family-friendly panoramic tour has its starting point at the train station in Pernitz. Duration approx. 1:45h.
- Half of it is an attractive mountain trail, half of it is a fast gliding route - in between the natural jewel Steinwandklamm with its iron path and two caves. A great pre-Alpine potpourri for bikers and hikers. This is the Steinwandklamm route. Duration of this yet very demanding tour, about 3.5h.
Tip in the surroundings
In the municipal area of Muggendorf in the Viennese Alps, the Myraf Falls plunge into the depths at a total height of 125 meters. Visitors follow the rush over 26 winding bridges and on numerous footbridges and stairs. Especially recommended for families with children.
