2: Steam horse & Bikes
Have fun cycling along the old railway line. Railway and signal boards show you the right way.
On the cycle path of a former railway line, the stations tell stories about the railway. Along the route you will come across a variety of stops for your senses that invite you to rest, observe, play and listen. At selected the stops, the actor Wolfgang Böck acting as a train driver tells interesting and humorous stories about the Austrian train journey and the first steam engine and explains what these meant to the people back then.
The former train station Stammersdorf in Vienna is a starting point. At the Hagenbrunn stop the wheels and drive shafts protrude out of the earth. The scene is reminiscent of an archaeological site that reveals secrets of the past. In Pillichsdorf you will come across a surprising Lok-Fahr-Rad, [oversized bike] that is made of railway parts that were found. In Großengersdorf you will see the “Eisenbahnbrunnen” – a real drinking fountain! In Deutsch-Wagram we can visit the Eisenbahnmuseum [railway museum] as well as the boiler house in Strasshof! Across Gerasdorf you can go along the Marchfeldkanal cycle path and return to Stammersdorf.
