Our top tips for the season and the autumn holidays
A fabulous autumn awaits you!
Even in the autumn, Lower Austria’s countless excursion destinations invite the whole family for a great day out! Mum, Dad and the kids definitely won't be bored! Granny and Grandpa will also find something exciting to do!
To the Mostviertel!
Final call for mountain adventurers! The season for many mountain railway lines and other places of interest will end in late October/early November. So if you're quick, you can experience the Gemeindealpe Mitterbach (open until 1 November), for example, and the Zipline Annaberg (open daily from 10 September to 17 October, Saturday to Monday, and from 22 to 31 October) in the autumn too! Tip: the Wilden Wunder Card even gives you free entry to many attractions in the Mostviertel.
The Mendlingtal Adventure World will also be open daily until 31 October. In Lunz, a visit to the Haus der Wildnis (House of the Wilderness) is well worth it. You can also visit the White Zoo & Camel Theatre in Kernhof until 1 November (from Wednesday to Sunday in September, Saturday and Sunday in October, and daily between 26 October and 1 November 2022). The Eibl-Jet all-weather toboggan run in Türnitz will be open daily until 11 September, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as public holidays, from 12 September to 1 November. The MostBirnHaus (Must Pear House) even invites you to visit the Mostviertel Birnen-Erlebniswelt (Pear Adventure World) until 30 October.
Some destinations can be visited all year round, such as the Erlaufschlucht, the Haag Zoo, or "indoor classics" such as the Haubiversum or the Ybbstaler Solebad (Ybbstal Salt Water Bath) (closed from 12 to 15 September 2022 due to renovation work).
To the Weinviertel!
Even in the autumn, the Leiser Berge region is a top choice for family excursions. The approx. 4000 ha Leiser Berge Nature Park is located in the centre of the Weinviertel and offers nature, adventures and relaxation for all the family
Fun, adventure and action await you in the region's many places of interest. The Buschberg, the highest peak in the Weinviertel, wants you to explore it. Take a ride along the Weinviertel Draisine – a bicycle track on rails – from Ernstbrunn to Asparn. The Ernstbrunn Wildlife Park, which is home to the Wolf Science Centre, is highly recommended. The Alpaca Leisure Park in Oberkreuzstetten is also a true paradise for animal lovers. In the MAMUZ at Asparn an der Zaya, you can visit the special "Experimental Archaeology" exhibition until 27 November. In the Museumsdorf Niedersulz (Niedersulz Museum Village), you'll travel back in time to a village in 1900.
For families who love hiking, we recommend the Weinviertel "Gipfel-Treffen" (Summit Route). If you would rather explore the region by bike, then the Weinradweg Blauburger (Blauberger Wine Cycle Route) is for you.
Explore the banks of the Danube!
This area is also very diverse in the autumn. Until 31 October, you can still explore the Aggstein castle ruins by taking part in an adventure game and following in the footsteps of the knights. The Hubhof is open on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays in September and October and will delight kids and grown-ups alike with four different adventure worlds. In Tulln, there is a children's adventure tour at the Egon-Schiele-Geburtshaus (Egon Schiele's birthplace). The Stift Klosterneuburg (Klosterneuburg Abbey) is exciting for families all year round with its special family guided tour. An open creative workshop in the Gugging Museum invites children to come and paint, draw and design every first Sunday of the month at 3 PM.
There are also some cool events for kids, such as "In the Romans' living rooms" on 26 October, in the Carnuntum Roman Land. Reenactors hold Q&A sessions here and tell interesting stories about the daily lives of the Romans. At Halloween, on 31 October, the season of the Orth Castle National Park Centre ends.
To the Waldviertel!
Until the end of November, take a voyage of discovery through the Waldviertel (Forest Quarter) on the Waldviertel Railway! Tip: every Wednesday, there is an extra children's carriage on the diesel nostalgia tour.
For animal lovers, the Arbesbach Bear Sanctuary is a must. The cute bears can be visited until 1 November, when they go into hibernation. However, the Teddy Bear Trails can still be walked after 1 November.
If the weather is good, we recommend hiking the Nebelstein Adventure Trail or visiting the climbing park and the 3D bow obstacle course in the Rosenburg Adventure Park. Until 1 November, the interactive exhibits in the Sonnenwelt Großschönau museum invite explorers of all ages to find out more about the topics of climate protection and resource conservation. Some attractions that are open all year round and are suitable in bad weather include the KRISTALLIUM Glass Experience in Hirschenwies, the Amethyst World in Maissau and the SONNENTOR Adventure in Sprögnitz. The Heidenreichstein Cheesemakers' World is open to visitors until 18 December.
To the Viennese Alps!
"Go carefully through the forest" is the motto of the Waldexpedition für Wirbelwinde (Forest Expedition for Whirlwinds). The exciting offer for explorers can also be enjoyed on two dates in the autumn holidays. The Waldexpedition für Wirbelwinde is a multi-variety family adventure with two overnight stays, a guided forest expedition, climbing in the Hamari Climbing Park and much more in the beautiful, high-altitude environment of Mönichkirchen am Wechsel. There's also plenty of fun and games in the Eis-Greissler Adventure Park in Krumbach. Or would you fancy a journey through the history of ice cream?
The St. Corona am Wechsel Adventure Arena, a true outdoor adventure paradise, is also particularly popular with families. There are 24 stations in the Motorikpark, a mini bike park, and, of course, the fast and furious “Corona Coaster” summer toboggan run.
The Hohe Wand Nature Park, Puchi's World in Puchberg am Schneeberg and the Hamari Climbing Park in Mönichkirchen are also places that are exciting for children. A new arrival in 2022 is the Waldseilgarten Hirschenkogel Semmering (Hirschenkogel Semmering Forest Rope Garden). The season ends on 2nd November, so it's a perfect destination for the autumn holidays!
Tip: with the new Schneeberg-Rax combo ticket, you can explore both of the highest mountains in the Viennese Alps by rack-and-pinion and funicular railway at a lower price!
To the Wienerwald!
In the Wienerwald, some very special, adventurous hiking trails await families in a colourful autumn forest! Don't miss out on the three "Spürnasenrunden" (circular trails) along the "G´schichten aus dem Wienerwald.Der Wanderweg" ("Tales from the Viennese Forest. The hiking route") in the Helenental, newly signposted this year. These circular routes, adapted for children with fun and exciting discoveries, start in Baden, Heiligenkreuz and Alland.
The Triestingtal is also particularly worth experiencing for families: visit the Berndorfer Stilklassen (Berndorf Style Classes) immediately and take a walk on the Erlebnisweg Peilstein (Peilstein Adventure Walk).
Exciting, themed guided tours, such as the Fledermaus-Erlebnisweg (Bat Adventure Walk), are also recommended. On the way to the Einödhöhlen caves, children can find out more about bats with impressive play and learning stations. However, there's plenty of animal magic in the Sparbach Natural Park as well, or in a visit to the Purkersdorf Natural Park!
If the weather happens to bad, several museums with special family tours are waiting for you. In the Stift Klosterneuburg (Klosterneuburg Abbey), for example, children and parents are taken through 900 years in an exciting voyage of discovery.
