Ternitz

Ternitz is a city located in the district of Neunkirchen in the lower Schwarza Valley. Its territory includes the Gösing-Hochberg Group, which contains the highest point in the municipality at 898 meters. The city has many scenic excursion destinations such as Naturpark Sierningtal-Flatzer Wand. Well-known sights include the Stixenstein fortress and the Dunkelstein ruin as well as a number of churches – such as the parish church in Ternitz, which is protected as a historic monument.

Moreover, Ternitz stands out as the birthplace of many famous figures from arts and politics, among them the lyricist Herbert Hirschler or the sculptor Kurt Ingerl. The community has also received attention for its use as a backdrop for “Ternitz, Tennessee”, a film starring Nina Proll and Gerald Votava from the year 2000.

Ternitz: Hikes and cycle routes for families

The 609-meter high Gfieder is considered the local mountain of Ternitz. The view from its lookout point extends all the way to Semmering, Rax and Schneeberg. A number of other scenic routes in and around Ternitz await you: from cycling tours to hikes.

The challenging long-distance hike on the Haute Route Lower Austria takes you from Ternitz to Altenmarkt. You cross the highest peaks between the Schneeberg and the Ybbstaler Alps.
