A gourmet tour of World Heritage sites
This time, we have tasted the culinary highlights in the region around Kreuzberg.
The world’s first mountain railway snaked through the beautiful Vienna Alps in Lower Austria, and has since entered the history books as a World Heritage site. We know only too well why it was built here, of all places.
That tastes good to us: Our tasty tips
If you have ever visited the Vienna Alps in Lower Austria, you will know that it is not just the views that are fantastic. Some menus also give participants of JUST ENJOY tours unforgettable views – such as the ones that the Looshaus am Kreuzberg gave us. For 5 decades, the family have cooked their way into the hearts of its visitors, with the help of seasonal delicacies from the region, and the restaurant has become a calling point on many hiking trails. If you want to carry on indulging, we recommend an overnight stay in one of the minimalistic but comfortable rooms. Meanwhile in Kreuzberg, the Speckbacherhütte hut is located at 1,089m above sea level. Top-notch regional home cooking, such as venison goulash, roast pork with sauerkraut, and dumplings, awaits you. The oldest rhododendron in Europe blossoms here in May, in full bloom. Our dessert tip: the delicious poppy seed cake! The Althammerhof Schneidhofer is on the neighbouring Breitenstein. This idyllic tavern surprised us with its homemade sheep’s cheese products, and an unusual dessert, which we would happily order again and again: sheep’s cheese with cinnamon and honey. An absolute must!
Don't miss out: Our excursion tips
In the Vienna Alps, you should certainly stop at the Reichenauer Zwieback- & Cafe-Konditorei Alber café and confectioner’s, to try a genuine Reichenau biscuit. For a more bitter taste, head to Payerbach, where our tasty tour visits the Raxbräu brewery for a couple of delicious beers. And when you are in the Paradise of Scenic Views, a visit to the 20 Schilling Blick, which used to feature on old bank notes, is a must. The viewpoint can be reached on the in the tracks of UNESCO World Heritage Site Semmering Railway route, via the “Bahnwanderweg” hiking route. Our tip: Through the Vienna Alps Viewer at the viewpoint, you can look at the scenery from a whole new perspective. The Vinodukt also allows you to do this. The wine bar in the old viaduct of the Semmering Railway impresses guests with the best wines from Vienna to Trieste. Our absolute favourite: A glass of wine at the “Payerbacher Gurgelkratzer” or “Payerbacher Lauser”.
